Dawgz Beat Barnstormers & Continue Win Streak Posted: 7/11/2010 12:31:55 AM
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz went toe to toe with the Iowa Barnstormers Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City in front of 5,415 fans. The game proved to as exciting as the earlier season matchup between the two franchises. The Dawgz were able to protect and build on the lead they had secured in the first half of play and came out with the 52-42 victory over the Barnstormers.
The Barnstormers were first on the board with a one yard touchdown run by their quarterback, Ryan Vena. The Dawgz answered right back with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Tommy Grady to Timon Marshall. On their next possession, the Barnstormers were marching down the field when Vena threw an interception to Dawgz defensive back, Fred Shaw. Shaw snatched the ball and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown to give the Dawgz the lead, 14-7.
As the Barnstormers were threatening to score at the beginning of the second quarter, David Hyland forced and recovered a fumble by running back Rodney Filer, putting the ball back in the hands of the Dawgz offense. The Dawgz capitalized on the Barnstormer turnover and marched down the field for another touchdown, a two yard rush by Chad Cook. This put the Dawgz up 21-7. Vena found wide receiver Jesse Schmidt on a 5 yard route to cut the Dawgz lead to 21-14. The Barnstormer defense then stepped up and caused fumble by Grady which was recovered by lineman Charles Johnson. Just three plays later, Vena connected with Larry Kendrick to tie the game at 21. With the second half coming to a close, Grady found Jerel Myers for a 13 yard score giving the lead back to the Dawgz, 28-21.
The Dawgz received the ball first to start the second half and went on nearly an eight minute drive which resulted in a 23 yard Michael Salerno field goal, increasing the Dawgz lead to ten. Vena went on to connect with Kendrick on an 18 yard touchdown pass. This cut the Dawgz lead to 3, 31-28.
The fourth quarter proved to be one of battling offenses. First, Grady found Marshall on a 22 yard touchdown pass. Vena then looked to Kendrick for his third touchdown of the night. Grady found a big target on his next score, tight end Jeremy Ashcraft. Vena went back to Schmidt to keep the Barnstormers in the game. Next, Grady went back to Marshall for his third touchdown catch of the night. The Dawgz up by 10, gave the ball back to the Barnstormers with :56 left in the game. The Barnstormers moved the ball down to the Dawgz 3 yard line but on their next play, Vena was sacked for a seven yard loss by MK Bruce and Dustin Barno. On the next play, Vena looked to Schmidt for the score but the ball was intercepted by Yard Dawgz defensive back Sergio Gilliam which sealed the 52-42 victory for the Dawgz.
After the game, Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “This to date is one of our biggest victories. To come from where we started the season to where we are now says a lot about our ball club. We are now smack in the middle of the playoff race and truly control our own destiny. I feel that we are starting to peak at the right time.”

In the early season match up between the Dawgz and BattleWings, Oklahoma City came out on top in one of the highest scoring games in franchise and league history with the final score of 88-79.
Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “We have to find a way to win. This Bossier team will be extremely challenging because of their ability to score a lot of points. I can't emphasize enough that we just need to find a way to win. I think this game will go down to the wire just like so many of our past games.”
The BattleWings are coming off of a (78-39) loss to the Tampa Bay Storm on the NFL Network’s “Game of the Week” this past weekend. With the loss of their starting quarterback, Raymond Philyaw, mid-season due to a season ending knee injury, the BattleWings have struggled offensively. Bossier-Shreveport is looking for a win at home and the opportunity to regroup after the loss to Tampa Bay.
All Yard Dawgz games will be broadcast live on 96.1 KXY. Internet broadcasts of all Yard Dawgz games can be viewed by visiting www.niftytv.com.
The Yard Dawgz will return home Saturday, July 10, to take on the Iowa Barnstormers at the Cox Convention Center. Dawgz Win Defensive Battle With Vigilantes Posted: 6/29/2010 10:40:36 AM
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz faced the Dallas Vigilantes Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City in front of 5,114 fans. The game proved to be a battle of the two defenses with the teams combining for 4 interceptions (2 OKC – 2 DAL), 5 turnover on downs (2 OKC – 3 DAL), 5 sacks (4 OKC – 1 DAL) and two forced fumbles (1 OKC – 1 DAL).
The Dawg defense sacked Vigilante quarterback BJ Hall twice on their opening drive. The first sack was by Brandon Perkins for an eleven yard loss. On the next play, Dustin Barno sacked Hall for a six yard loss. The Dawgz were first on the board with a Craig Fulton Jr. 18 yard touchdown catch from Yard Dawgz quarterback, Tommy Grady. The Dawgz defense stepped up again with an MK Bruce sack of Hall on fourth down giving the ball back to the Dawgz. The Dawgz defense was successful in keeping the Vigilantes offense out of the end zone in the first quarter.
The Vigilante defense stepped up in the second quarter by sacking Grady and forcing a fumble into the end zone for a Dallas score by Brandon Pahula. Grady threw an interception on his next possession giving the ball back to the Vigilantes. Grady turned it around with a 24 yard touchdown pass to Al Hunt putting the Dawgz back on top 13-10. Former Yard Dawg, Matt Fields, found the end zone after a 26 yard pass from Hall to give the Vigilantes the lead, 17-13. Yard Dawgz emergency kicker, Michael Salerno, drove home a 24 yard field goal to close out the second quarter. Going into the locker room, the Dawgz were down one, 16-17.
The defenses continued to battle it out in the third quarter. The Dawgz turned it over on fourth down on their opening possession but got the ball back after Mike Brown forced a fumble which was recovered by MK Bruce. The only score of the quarter was a 31 yard Vigilante touchdown pass from Hall to Fields.
Like the Dawgz last two games, it seemed as if this game would come down to the last play of the game. With one minute remaining and down by 2, the Dawgz attempted an onside kick. The Vigilantes got possession of the ball with a short field but the Dawgz defense held tough and forced the Vigilantes to attempt a field goal. Lewis missed the field goal wide left giving the Dawgz possession with :41 remaining on the clock. Grady found Fulton on a 24 yard pass with only 15.4 remaining on the clock giving the Dawgz the lead, 35-31. The chance of a Dallas victory can to an end with a David Hyland interception of Hall’s pass as time expired. The Dawgz went on to celebrate the 35-31 victory.
After the game, Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “This is one of the best defensive efforts that I have witnessed since my affiliation with the AFL began in 1998. I could not be more proud of our team’s effort and perseverance to secure the win.”
The Yard Dawgz will travel to Bossier-Shreveport, Louisiana to take on the BattleWings next Saturday, July 3rd, at the Century Tel Center. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM (CST). The Yard Dawgz head into Saturday’s match up after a disappointing loss to the Arizona Rattlers (56-55) in a well-fought battle. The Dawgz are currently ranked 3rd in total defense and 2nd in pass defense proving to be the team’s greatest asset. Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen commented, “It is good to be back home after playing against two of the top teams in the AFL and knowing we are close to being a potential playoff contending team. This week, we will find out if we are pretenders or contenders. We won’t allow Dallas’ 1-9 record to fool us. This is the same team that was picked to win it all at the beginning of the season and as of late, they are actually playing some pretty good football.”
The Vigilantes are coming off of a 55-52 loss to the Alabama Vipers. With a mid-season coaching change Dallas is looking to break their seven game losing streak. Kenny Henderson, WR, is a threat in their return game, ranked 1st in the league in total kickoff returns (1326).

Dawgz Snake Bitten by Rattlers Posted: 6/14/2010 5:12:27 PM
OKLAHOMA CITY –
The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz lost a well-fought game on Friday night in Phoenix against the Arizona Rattlers in front of 10,115 fans. The game came down to the Dawgz last possession, a failed two-point conversion. Had the conversion been successful, the Dawgz would have escaped with the upset win.
The Dawgz gained momentum quickly by scoring on the first play of the first possession with a 44-yard touchdown pass by Tommy Grady to receiver Craig Fulton Jr. The Rattlers QB Nick Davila answered by throwing a 13-yard pass to JJ McKelvey for a touchdown. Gaining the lead at the end of the first quarter Grady connected with Fulton Jr. on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Heading into the second quarter the Dawgz led the Rattlers 13-7.
To start the second quarter, Tod Devoe caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Davila putting the Rattlers up by one. Fulton Jr. went in for his third touchdown of the night after receiving a 5-yard pass from Grady. Devoe then carried the ball in 3-yards for a touchdown once again putting Arizona up by a point. Grady threw another touchdown pass for 25 yards to Xavier Lee, his first touchdown of the evening. Davila connected with Devoe for a 6-yard touchdown pass, giving Devoe his third touchdown in the second quarter. With :58 left on the clock in the first half, Andrew Eminger kicked a 22-yard field goal which put the Dawgz in the lead 29-28 as they headed into the locker room at half-time.
The third quarter proved to be one of minimal scoring. David Hyland intercepted a pass by Davila during the Rattlers’ first possession, which the Dawgz were unable to capitalize on. Davila threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to McKelvey, putting the Rattlers in the lead once again. The Dawgz answered by scoring on an 8-yard pass by Grady to Timon Marshall. At the end of the third quarter the Dawgz and Rattlers were tied at 35-35.
The Rattlers were the first to score in the fourth quarter. Rod Windsor caught a 4-yard pass from Davila giving the Rattlers a seven point advantage. Grady threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Fulton Jr., his fourth on the night. Windsor then rushed for 1 yard scoring his second touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Dawgz came back to tie the game with a 24-yard touchdown pass by Grady to Alvance Robinson, his first score as a Yard Dawg. Riley Swanson recovered the Dawgz on-side kick for a 6 yard score. Down by 7 points the Dawgz scored as time expired on the clock with Lee’s 19-yard reception from Grady. The Dawgz decided to go for the win by attempting a two point conversion with no time on the clock versus send the game into overtime. The two point conversion was denied by the Rattlers defense, which resulted in the Dawgz losing by a single point (55-56).

Grady found Timon Marshall for a 26 yard touchdown on the Dawgz next offensive possession. A Dawgz failed onside kick attempt gave the Vipers a short field with only one minute remaining in the quarter but the Dawgz defense held tough and defensive back, Fred Shaw picked off Eakin for his second interception of the night. The Dawgz worked their way down the field and managed the clock efficiently over the last minute of the quarter. Yard Dawgz running back, Chad Cook closed out the quarter with a 3 yard touchdown run giving the Dawgz the lead 32-20 at half.

Viper quarterback, Kevin Eakin connected with Larry Shipp on a 46 yard touchdown to close out the third quarter. The Dawgz went into the final quarter of play up 45-33.
The Dawgz defense continued to click on all cylinders as Gilliam once again intercepted Eakin but this time, he took it in for a score. The Vipers changed quarterbacks, but the result was still the same. Mike Brown collected the fifth interception of the night for the Dawgz secondary. This is our most important game to date in many ways; number one they are currently in first place in our division and number two being that it is one of the biggest league rivalry games during the AFL season. In order for us to be successful, our young ball club is going to have to mature light years if we plan on beating the Talons. The penalties will have to cease if we plan on being a contending team.”

Dawgz Lose Heartbreaker To Shock Posted: 5/16/2010 8:25:58 PM
Oklahoma City -
The Yard Dawgz lost a heartbreaker to the Spokane Shock on Sunday afternoon in the Cox Convention Center in front of 4,415 fans.
After winning the coin toss and electing to receive the ball to start the second half, the Dawgz defense came up with a big stop on downs. Yard Dawgz quarterback Tommy Grady was quick to connect with one of his favorite receivers, Al Hunt on a 38 yard touchdown pass. Shock quarterback, Kyle Rowley found Huey Whittaker for a 9 yard score. After last week’s game winning kickoff return for a touchdown, Timon Marshall did it again. This time the return went for 56 yards. The quarter ended with the Dawgz up 14-7 over the Shock.
Spokane put up a total of 24 points in the second quarter. The first score was a Rowley 21 yard pass to Shaun Kauleinamoku, followed by a 2 yard pass to Markee White, a 2 yard pass to Huey Whittaker and an 18 yard Taylor Rowan field goal. The Dawgz put up 14 points in the quarter, a 4 yard pass from Grady to Craig Fulton Jr. and a 27 yard pass from Grady to Marshall. Going into the locker room at halftime, the Shock led the Dawgz 31-28.
The Dawgz were the first to put up points in the third quarter with a 19 yard pass from Grady to Anthony Hines. The Shock answered quickly on their next possession with a Payne 2 yard rush for score. Yard Dawgz, Craig Fulton Jr., pulled in a 13 yard pass from Grady for the next score. Rowley then went back to Kauleinamoku for a 25 yard score to close out the third quarter with the Shock up 45-42.
The offensive fireworks continued in the fourth quarter with the teams combining for 44 points. After battling back and forth, the Shock got a lucky bounce off the iron and recovered their own kick on the 2 yard line. The Dawgz defense held tough and did not allow the Shock in the end zone and regained possession on the 2 yard line. Just when it looked like the Dawgz had regained momentum, they fumbled the ball in the end zone which was recovered for a Shock score giving them the lead at 65-56. During the last minute of the game, Yard Dawgz David Hyland interception a Rowley pass in the end zone with 8.8 left on the clock which gave the Dawgz one last shot at the win. Grady’s pass fell incomplete as time expired giving the Shock the victory, 68-63.
Following the game, Coach McEwen commented, “It was a massive disappointment because we really felt that we could win against a solid contender but the mistakes killed our momentum. The quarterback center exchange is something that is costing us games and it has to get taken care of.”
The Yard Dawgz hit the road next week to take on their division rivals, the Tulsa Talons, at the BOK Center on Saturday, May 22nd at 7 PM. The Yard Dawgz return home on May 28th to host the Alabama Vipers. Single game tickets are on sale now, starting at only $10! The Yard Dawgz Block Party will begin at 5 PM on Reno and kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM. For additional information, please call (405) 228-3294 or visit http://www.okcyarddawgz.com/.

Grady and Marshall Named AFL Players of the Week Posted: 5/12/2010 9:40:15 AM
OKLAHOMA CITY— The OKC Yard Dawgz are proud to announce that the Arena Football League has named QB Tommy Grady and WR Timon Marshall players of the week. Grady was awarded the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week for his stand-out performance last weekend against Bossier-Shreveport. Marshall was awarded the Spalding Highlight of the Game for his game winning touchdown last weekend with :33 left in the fourth quarter.
Grady had not only a stand-out performance for the weekend, it was also his stand-out performance of the season. Grady completed 34-of-42 passes for 430 yards and 10 touchdowns, all are season-highs for the second year Yard Dawg. His completion rate of 81 percent is nearly 15 points higher than his season average. So far this season, Grady has tallied 1,513 passing yards, good for fifth most in the league.
“We knew that once we could solidify our offensive line Tommy was not only capable of leading the team, but putting up big numbers, as well. A lot of credit needs to go to all the receivers because they all had a good night” said Head Coach Sparky McEwen.
Marshall stole the show and the game this weekend in Oklahoma City’s 88-79 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings. The BattleWings managed to pull ahead 79-75 in the fourth quarter with :33 remaining on the clock, but the Yard Dawgz’ staunch defense forced Bossier-Shreveport to resort to a field goal as the final minutes were ticking down. The field goal was missed and fell into the hands of Marshall, who ran the ball back for a score to put Oklahoma City ahead 82-79 with only :04 remaining on the clock. The Yard Dawgz managed another score off a fumble recovery on the final play of the game, but it was Marshall’s return that put Oklahoma City up for good.
“When we signed Timon Marshall we knew we had a difference maker,” said McEwen.
The Yard Dawgz will host the Spokane Shock on Sunday, May 16, at the Cox Convention Center. Single game tickets are on sale, starting at only $10! The Yard Dawgz Block Party will begin at noon on Reno and kickoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

Dawgz Top Lineman Signs With Canadian Football League Posted: 5/4/2010 9:36:52 AM
OKLAHOMA CITY – Yard Dawgz top offensive lineman, Kelly Butler, has been offered and accepted a contract to play with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Butler’s (6’8, 330) knowledge of and relationship to Head Coach Sparky McEwen led him to the Yard Dawgz in 2008. Since 2008, Butler has spent the last three season of arena football as an anchor to the Dawgz offensive line. Prior to joining the Dawgz, Butler started over 20 games during his three plus seasons in the National Football League while playing for both the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns. The Purdue graduate was drafted in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
“The Yard Dawgz organization will miss a true professional within the Oklahoma City community and a physical force on the field that gave us 100% effort during his stay here in Oklahoma City. I only wish that the Yard Dawgz had every player on the roster that played the game with the passion of Kelly Butler. We wish him well in his continued success. No one deserves this opportunity more,” commented Head Coach Sparky McEwen.
The Yard Dawgz return home on May 8th, to host the Bossier Shreveport BattleWings. Single game tickets are on sale, starting at only $10! Vigilantes Prove To Be Too Much For Dawgz Posted: 5/3/2010 2:11:20 PM
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Yard Dawgz traveled to American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX last Friday night to take on the Dallas Vigilantes in front of an announced crowd of 7,051. Saturday night marked the Vigilante home opener as well as their first win in franchise history.
The Vigilantes offense came out on a mission in the first quarter. Their first touchdown of the night came off of a 9 yard pass from Vigilante quarterback Collin Drafts to wide receiver Larry Brackins. The Dallas defense stopped the Yard Dawgz offense on their first possession giving the ball back to the Vigilante offense. Dallas fullback Josh White ran the ball in from the 4 yard line to put the Vigilantes up by 13. As the first quarter was coming to an end, the Dawgz tried to get on the board with a field goal but it fell short of the nets and was returned by Kenny Henderson for a Vigilante touchdown. The quarter closed with the Vigilantes up 20-0 over the Dawgz.
While the Vigilantes dominated the first quarter, the second quarter began with the Dawgz scoring 21 unanswered points. Dawgz wide receiver Timon Marshall caught touchdown passes of 9 and 21 yards and linebacker Aaron Chavers recovered a Josh White fumble for a score. The Vigilantes then answered with 21 points of their own. The first Vigilante score of the quarter was a Drafts 13 yard touchdown pass to Derek Lee. On the following Yard Dawgz offensive possession, Grady’s pass was tipped at the line and recovered by Chris Brown for the interception and score. The Dawgz then attempted an onside kick to get one more score before the close of the half but the onside kick was recovered by the Vigilantes. Dallas closed the quarter with another score by Brackins. At half, the Vigilantes led the Dawgz 41-20.
The Dawgz turned the ball over on downs to start the third quarter and the Vigilantes then scored on an 8 yard touchdown pass from Drafts to Lee. The Dawgz answered back with an 18 yard touchdown pass from Grady to Marshall giving Marshall his third touchdown catch of the night. The quarter ended with the Vigilantes up 48-28.
Dallas opened the fourth quarter with a 1 yard touchdown run by Drafts. Grady connected with Anthony Hines on a 16 yard touchdown pass late in the fourth but the scoring drought in the first quarter proved to be too much for the Dawgz to overcome as they fell 34-55 to the Vigilantes.
Following the game, Coach McEwen noted, “We knew going into the game versus Dallas that it would be a true measure of where we need to be in order to compete week in and week out in the AFL. Our players now have a better understanding of what it takes to compete in a hostile environment after our last two weeks on the road.”
The Yard Dawgz return home on May 8th, to host the Bossier Shreveport BattleWings. Single game tickets are on sale, starting at only $10! The Yard Dawgz Block Party will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Reno and kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For additional information, please call (405) 228-3294 or visit www.okcyarddawgz.com.
